One copper South American ceremonial riding stirrup. 6 1/4" X 4 1/4" X 5 1/2" high. I have read many articles about these types of stirrups. Many influences are given. Each country's history has to be studied to see where the influences are from. Copper is heavily mined in Chile and Peru. This stirrup is a Spanish design. It is covered with artwork on both sides, resembling Aztec or Peruvian designs. These ceremonial stirrups are still used in South American and Spanish countries. I have found many of these sold as singles. Where is the matching one? Odd, isn't it? This one appears well-worn, but I doubt it is an antique. Traveling became very popular during the Victorian Era and continued until the Great Depression but again became popular after WWII. Many travelers went to South America. I believe that these many stirrups listed online were souvenirs from travelers and then became a popular items for home decor. Many wonderful exotic romantic stories were developed to sell these wares. That all being said, there are many of these stirrups online. I still love them and find them a great conversation piece. Look for the more detailed ones. It still takes a good artisan to make these items. They make great doorstops, bookends, or table items.
